I started working with alternative processes in photograhy in graduate school. I was introduced to them by Robin Brown, who became my mentor, and later my boss.

The appeal of these proceeses was mostly the fact that one could print photographic images on surfaces other than photographic paper. This may not seem such a huge deal, but this was in 1989, before inkjet and digital printing grew up. Being able to print on artist’s papers in turn allowed you to use anything else you might want on those papers, with the images being incorporated very will, as opposed to being collaged or glued on the surface, or other media stuck on photographic paper.

Originally, I played with photo-screen printing, which was a lot of fun, and let me work through a lot of thematic kind of issues, as far as combining images and composition. This then led to the alternative processes, which allowed for easier and better incorporation of mixed media.

Enough. On to the images.
